Our Core Values and How they Contribute to Nurturing of Our Boys to Men of Integrity

The world is rapidly changing, and education needs to adapt to prepare our children and future generations for the challenges and opportunities they will face.

Traditionally, education has focused on providing students with a set of knowledge and skills that would enable them to be successful in a particular career or field.

However, the rapid pace of technological advancement, globalization, and the changing nature of work means that the skills and knowledge that were once considered essential may no longer be relevant.
At Merishaw School, we work to ensure that our boys are prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
We are constantly rethinking education and the way we deliver the same to our ready and enthusiastic learners. This means focusing on developing critical thinking skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities, as well as promoting cross-cultural awareness and understanding.

We strive to provide a flexible and adaptive education model with the capacity to meet the diverse needs of learners.

This involves embracing new technologies and teaching methodologies, as well as collaborating with industry leaders and other stakeholders to ensure that education is aligned with the needs of the workforce.
Ultimately, our goal is to prepare students to be lifelong learners who are capable of adapting to change and contributing to society in meaningful ways. By re-imagining education and embracing change, we can ensure that our children and future generations are equipped to succeed in a rapidly changing world.

An ideal education model must empower the boys to help themselves before they can influence their communities and later make an impact on the global scale. This statement sums up our belief at Home of the Boy Child as envisioned by the following core values.

Our Core Values and How they Contribute to a Holistic Education for Our Boys

Our core values play a crucial role in shaping our identity, culture while at the same time providing a sense of direction. These are acronyms in the name Merishaw as follows:

M – Men of Valor and Purpose
E – Empowered Entrepreneurs
R – Resilience
I – Innovation
S – Spirituality
H – Honesty
A – Accountability
W – Winning mentality

Men of Valor and Purpose

Merishaw School believes in instilling in all our boys the values of valor and purpose. This means encouraging individuals to develop a strong sense of integrity, respect, and responsibility in all their actions. The school aims to nurture learners who are confident, compassionate, and committed to making a positive impact on their communities.

Empowered Entrepreneurs

We empower learners to become successful entrepreneurs by fostering creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. This involves providing learners with opportunities to develop an entrepreneurial mindset, think innovatively, and take calculated risks. For instance, through the 4K Club, we practically teach our young men the concept of Agribusiness. That is, we sell to them seedlings, fertilizer, avail to them far implements and everything required for them to farm successfully.

When their produce is ready, we as a school and members of staff make the first market for them. Our intention is to make them aware that they can grow to be people who feed their communities, the nation and the world at large.

Resilience

Merishaw School believes that resilience is a key factor in success. The school aims to instill in all learners the ability to bounce back from setbacks and overcome challenges. This involves developing a growth mindset, being persistent, and having a positive attitude. The school provides learners with the support they need to develop resilience, including counselling services, mentorship, and access to resources.
We teach our boys to thrive not just academically but also socially. One of the things we strive to do is build the emotional intelligence of our boys so that they remain stable even in the phase of challenging circumstances.

Innovation

The school believes in fostering a culture of innovation by encouraging learners to be creative, to think critically, and to embrace change. This involves providing learners with opportunities to experiment, to take risks, and to learn from their failures. The school encourages learners to develop an entrepreneurial mindset, to be adaptable, and to pursue their passions. The most recent example of the innovation culture at Home of the Boy Child is an innovation by two brilliant boys Cyril Baraka and Joshua Indire.

Their innovation is a CCTV enhancement technology where in a school setup, the system is able to capture students’ faces and display details such as admission number, class, and name in real-time.
The students used the Python programming language which supports machine learning under the visual studio code text editor to develop the innovation. This pioneering project was presented by Joshua Indire and Cyril Baraka under the patronage of Mr. Ogeke Dennis (Mwalimu Ogeke).

Spirituality

Merishaw School values the spiritual development of learners. The school encourages individuals to develop a strong sense of faith, to cultivate a spirit of service, and to embrace diversity. This involves promoting respect for different cultures and religions, encouraging learners to serve their communities, and providing opportunities for spiritual growth.
We have a resident chaplain whose main responsibility is to cater to the spiritual needs of our young men. The chaplain works together with the pastoral team and the counselling department for a holistic approach to spiritual, emotional and psychological well-being of our boys.
Some of our programs that contribute to this greater goal include the following:

Mondays - Counseling sessions facilitated by renowned and experienced counsellors.

Wednesday - Devotion facilitated by the office of the chaplain and the pastoral team.

Thursday - Family mentorship sessions (the boys are split into smaller manageable groups and allocated a surrogate parent; a teacher who interacts with the boys and gets to know them on an individual basis. If there’s any issue that needs redress, it’s easier for the surrogate parent to pick them up, solve or escalate the issue so the boys find the help they need.

Honesty

At Merishaw School, we integrate honesty in our curriculum delivery since we understand it’s essential for fostering integrity, character development, and creating a positive educational environment. Honesty serves as the foundation for personal growth, ethical decision-making, and building trust among students and the school community. Here are some ways to promote honesty as a core value in a boys' high school:

1. Lead by Example: Our staff model honesty in their interactions, behaviour, and communication. Demonstrating integrity and transparency creates a culture where honesty is valued and expected.
2. Explicitly Teach and Discuss Honesty: We incorporate discussions, lessons, and activities that explore the importance of honesty, its impact on personal relationships, and the consequences of dishonesty. Also, we encourage open dialogue about ethical dilemmas, emphasizing the value of truthfulness.
3. Create an Ethical Framework: We have established clear guidelines and expectations for honesty and integrity in our school's code of conduct or honor code. Reinforcing these principles regularly and ensuring students understand the consequences of violating these standards has seen us record remarkable improvement in the behavior of our boys.
4. Encourage Academic Integrity: The school emphasizes the importance of academic honesty and the negative consequences of cheating. We educate students on creating a culture that values hard work and intellectual integrity.
5. Recognize and Reward Honesty: We celebrate and acknowledge acts of honesty and integrity, both small and significant. Recognizing students who exhibit honesty reinforces the value of this virtue and motivates others to follow suit.

Accountability

The school values accountability and encourages all learners to take responsibility for their actions. This involves developing a strong sense of personal and collective responsibility, being honest and transparent, and holding oneself and others accountable for their commitments. Our buys are given leadership roles and responsibilities and then empowered to function in the respective positions. For instance, in the halls of residence, each boy gets to be in charge of their cube in a week. The leader of the week answers to the prefect in charge of boarding who in turn is answerable to the wing master.

It’s the responsibility of the weekly prefect to ensure the members of his cube make their beds, the room is cleaned on time and that there’s order throughout the week. With the awareness that they’ll need to give an account, the boys do their best to ensure their week is flawless.

Winning Mentality

We encourage our boys to develop a winning mentality by embracing a culture of excellence, setting high standards, and striving for continuous improvement.
This involves fostering a sense of competition, promoting healthy competition, and recognizing and celebrating success. The school encourages learners to develop a growth mindset, to be persistent, and to pursue their goals with passion and dedication.
As a testament to this, our young morans recently engaged in various competitions and did remarkably well. The following are quick highlights of the outcomes.

➔ 51 boys secured a ticket in this year’s World Scholars Cup Global Round to be held in Bangkok - Thailand in August this year.

➔ The School emerged 2nd in the Transformative Technology and Digital Skills - STEM category during this year’s Great Places to School Annual Awards, we emerged.

The core values summarize our zeal and drive as we work to become the center of excellence for nurturing young men that shall go out to transform their communities and the world at large. Our students walk into our gates as boys but they will leave as creative, innovative, successful and responsible lifelong learners ready for the future.

Why Character Formation Should Be An Integral Part of Boys' Education
